You will likely sweat like a pig and require numerous breaks to catch your breath even during this relatively easy phase. This is because you are engaging and stretching muscles that have been dormant for years. You will also be sucking at the air for every molecule of oxygen you can get. It will be a week or two before your lungs are really open, prepare to gasp like a newborn taking its very first breath. You will realize how fat you and other regular people are compared to real athletes. This is because your certified instructors will have the physiques of comic book superheroes. You will weigh 4. It will make no sense that such . The instructors are not huge or freakishly jacked like traditional body builders, but I wouldn't want to bet against them in any contests of strength. The idea is to be able to lift heavy weights but in as efficient a manner as possible, and then to be able to run a mile while the old school body builder huffs and puffs behind you. And you, big guy, are not strong. You are fat and incidentally may be able to lift some weight up. You will learn about real strength very soon. You will begin learning the lingo and using it without feeling like a dork: W. O. D (or WOD): Workout of the Day, this is the combination of exercises, prescribed weights and time allotment that will be the law of the land from the first class to the last. Typically a WOD will consist of one gymnastic move (pull- ups, ring rows, sit- ups, etc.), one aspect of cardio (rowing, running, jumping rope, etc.) and one Olympic power- lifting maneuver (back squats, clean & jerks, dead lifts, push- presses, etc.). RX: When one does the prescribed amount of weight and reps, one is said to have RX'd (as in, he or she followed the prescription). Box: Cross. Fit centers are not called gyms, they're called . The reality is that these types of injuries can and do occur with any kind of training if taken too far and under the wrong type of supervision. You are equally likely to be injured while ice skating, lifting weights alone, horseback riding, surfing or doing any other type of strenuous activity if you are engaging recklessly and not taking the proper precautions. I would also note that there is an ongoing fear- mongering campaign being waged by the traditional fitness clubs and gyms. They see the proliferation of the Cross. Think about the counting, the counting down, the mental division of large quantities of reps into small, more manageable- seeming blocks. You'll begin to respect endurance and stamina. When you're a kid, your idea of strength revolves around how much one can lift, what someone's arms and chest look like, etc. If you haven't yet grown out of this idea, you will upon beginning Cross. Fit. You will begin to be much more amazed at things like quad strength and lower back strength. You'll be blown away by the ability of others to do hundreds of airsquats or hold various static positions (holding one's body in a plank six inches above the ground or half- squatting with one's back against the wall, with thighs perpendicular to the ground and a 2. Intolerance to a food does not involve the immune system and antibodies are not produced against food molecules. Symptoms result from a reduced ability of the body to process components of the food, often due to a deficiency in the enzymes required for their metabolism, absorption, or utilisation. The reaction occurs when the level of the metabolite (the food component) exceeds the body’s ability to process it; this is called the person’s limit of tolerance, above which symptoms develop. Both hormone levels change at ovulation and just prior to the onset of menstruation and many women experience an increase in histamine, and therefore occurrence or worsening of symptoms, at those times. The stomach and duodenum have a rich blood supply, derived from the aorta (the main artery in the body) and are also supplied by nerves from the spinal cord. Special cells (parietal cells) in the glands of the inner lining of the stomach secrete powerful hydrochloric acid that help break down food in the stomach. Other special cells release protein- digesting enzymes (pepsinogens) which become active in the acid environment and begin digesting protein. The stomach secretes a number of other important substances including hormones to regulate the functions of the stomach, mucus to protect the gastric lining from damage by acid, and a substance (intrinsic factor) which is necessary for the body to absorb vitamin B1. An internal image of a healthy duodenum. Coordinated contractions of the stomach are important for grinding and mixing ingested food with the gastric secretions. This ensures good mixing of stomach contents and also helps to filter out partially digested food to prevent large pieces from entering the duodenum. Lastly, partially digested food and liquids are carefully emptied from the stomach, through the pylorus, into the duodenum. These processes of secreting gastric juices, mixing food and gastric emptying are normally carefully regulated and involve the coordinated action of hormones, nerves, and muscles. Once food enters the duodenum, its acidity is neutralized by mixing with alkaline juices from the pancreas and bile in preparation for further digestion and absorption lower down the small intestine. Dysfunction. Disorders of the stomach and the duodenum are extremely common and a considerable source of suffering in the population. Disruption of this balance caused by too much acid (or weakened defense) can result in erosions or ulcers with symptoms including upper abdominal pain, indigestion or heartburn, nausea and/or vomiting. In other patients, symptoms may result from problems with stomach emptying. This can either be the result of a physical blockage (i. Symptoms include abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting after meals, lack of appetite and early satiety (inability to eat a full meal or feeling full after only a small amount of food). Erosions, ulcers and tumors may cause bleeding. If the bleeding is brisk and of sufficient quantity it may result in vomiting of bright red blood (hematemesis). Diet is believed to be important in the development of upper abdominal symptoms but there is little scientific evidence to incriminate individual foods or dietary components in causing particular symptoms. There is no specific diet which is known either to predispose to (or protect against) the development of peptic ulcers. In general, a sensible, balanced and healthy diet is recommended but people should avoid foods which they feel clearly upset their stomachs or provoke symptoms. Regular, unhurried meals are also important. Smoking. Smoking is an important factor in causing disorders of the stomach and duodenum. Tobacco contains compounds which increases acid production, impair production of protective mucus and damage the lining of the stomach, thereby predisposing to erosion and ulcers. Excess alcohol intake, especially spirits or hard liquor, irritates the gastric lining and may also play a role in causing gastritis, ulcers, and gastric cancer. A variety of medications may cause problems in the stomach and duodenum. Aspirin and other anti- inflammatory drugs (non- steroidal anti- inflammatory drugs, NSAID's) used to treat muscular and arthritic pain, commonly damage the stomach lining and cause erosions, ulcers and bleeding from the stomach and duodenum. Other medications interfere with gastric emptying and cause nausea, bloating or vomiting. If you suffer from problems with your stomach, you should always consult your doctor before taking any new medications. The role of psychological stress in the development of symptoms of indigestion and peptic ulcer disease is not clear.
